THE DESCRIPTION  OF ABI LOCAL GOVERNMENT

History

Abi is one of the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Cross River State, Nigeria. It is located in the central part of the state and has its headquarters in the town of Itigidi. The LGA shares boundaries with several other LGAs, including Yakurr, Boki, Ikom, Etung, and Obubra. The population of Abi LGA is estimated to be around 157,000 people, based on the 2006 census. The people of Abi are mainly farmers and traders, and the LGA is known for its production of crops such as yam, cassava, cocoa, and palm oil. According to the 2006 population census conducted by the National Population Commission of Nigeria, the population of the Abi Local Government Area was estimated to be around 157,271 people. However, it is important to note that this figure is over a decade old, and the actual population of the LGA may have increased significantly since then.

Geography

Abi Local Government Area is located in the central part of Cross River State, Nigeria. It covers a land area of approximately 1,552 square kilometers and has its headquarters in the town of Itigidi. The LGA is situated in the tropical rainforest region of Nigeria and is characterized by undulating terrain and numerous streams and rivers. Abi LGA has a humid tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the rainy season, which lasts from April to October, and the dry season, which runs from November to March. The average annual temperature in the LGA is around 27°C, while the average annual rainfall is about 2,000mm. The vegetation in Abi LGA is mainly tropical rainforest, with some areas of mangrove swamp forest along the coast.

Economy
Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Abi, and the LGA is known for its fertile land and abundant natural resources that support the cultivation of various crops. Some of the major crops grown in Abi LGA include yam, cassava, cocoa, palm oil, plantain, maize, and vegetables. The people also engage in fishing and hunting, especially in rural areas. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in promoting agro-processing and value addition in Abi LGA, with the aim of increasing income and improving the livelihoods of the people.
