Geography

Bakassi is a peninsula located on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. It lies between the Cross River estuary, which is near the city of Calabar in Cross River State, Nigeria, and the Rio del Rey estuary on the east, which is in Cameroon. The peninsula is about 800 square kilometers in size and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southeast. The transfer of Bakassi has had significant social, economic, and political implications for the people of the peninsula, many of whom are Nigerian nationals of the Efik ethnic group. The Nigerian government has provided support to these individuals to facilitate their relocation to other parts of Nigeria, but there have been concerns about the welfare and human rights of those affected by the transfer. As a result of the territorial dispute between Nigeria and Cameroon over Bakassi, the peninsula has been the subject of several international agreements and legal rulings.
