History

Bakassi was officially transferred to Cameroon in 2008 following a series of agreements and legal rulings. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in 2002 that Bakassi belonged to Cameroon, and Nigeria subsequently undertook a process of demarcation and transfer of sovereignty over the peninsula. The transfer was completed on August 14, 2008, when Nigeria officially ceded Bakassi to Cameroon, and Cameroon assumed full control over the peninsula.

The transfer of Bakassi has had significant social, economic, and political implications for the people of the peninsula, many of whom are Nigerian nationals of the Efik ethnic group. The Nigerian government has provided support to these individuals to facilitate their relocation to other parts of Nigeria, but there have been concerns about the welfare and human rights of those affected by the transfer.
