History of Jerre

Jerre Local Government Area is located in the North-Western part of Nigeria, specifically in Kebbi State. The local government area was created on August 27, 1991, when Kebbi State was created out of the old Sokoto State.

Before its creation, the area was part of the former Argungu Local Government Area. The local government headquarters is located in the town of Jerre, which is also the largest town in the area.

Jerre Local Government Area is predominantly inhabited by the Fulani people, who are predominantly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. The area is also known for its rich cultural heritage, especially its traditional festivals such as the Argungu Fishing Festival, which is a major tourist attraction in the state.

Geography of Jerre

Jerre Local Government Area is located in the North-Western part of Nigeria, specifically in Kebbi State. It covers a land area of approximately 1,397 square kilometers and is situated between latitude 12° 01' 21" N and longitude 4° 23' 35" E.

The local government area is bounded to the north by Aliero and Argungu Local Government Areas, to the east by Arewa and Kaoje Local Government Areas, to the south by Zuru Local Government Area, and to the west by Fakai Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The area is predominantly flat, with an average elevation of about 200 meters above sea level. The dominant vegetation in the area is the Guinea Savannah woodland, which is characterized by tall grasses, scattered trees, and shrubs.

 Economy of Jerre

The economy of Jerre Local Government Area is predominantly agrarian, with agriculture and animal husbandry as the main sources of livelihood for the people in the area. The area is blessed with fertile land, favorable climate, and abundant water resources, which make it suitable for the cultivation of crops such as rice, maize, millet, sorghum, groundnut, and cowpea. The local farmers also engage in animal husbandry, especially cattle rearing, which provides meat, milk, and hides for both local consumption and export.

The local government area is also endowed with mineral resources such as gold, limestone, and clay, which are yet to be fully exploited.
