History of Onna City
Onna is a Local Government Area situated in Akwa Ibom State, south-south of Nigeria. The name “Onna” emanated from an acronym of the names of the four predominant clans that are situated in the area: Nnung Ndem, Oniong, Awa Afaha, and lots more.
Onna local government area is located within Akwa Ibom state, which is the South-south geopolitical zone of The Federal Republic of Nigeria. The local government area is made up of several towns and villages which include Awa, Afaha Oniong, Awa, Afaha, Nnung Ndem, Ikot Idem Udo, Iquita, Ikot Ndua Iman, Ikot Nkan, and Ndon Eyo. The Onna language is a commonly spoken language in the area while the religion that is most practiced in the local government is Christianity. A number of colorful festivals are held in the local government area of Onna and these include the Ekpe masquerade and the Ekpo festivals.
