Description of Kastina state
The state of Katsina may be found in the northwest region of Nigeria's geopolitical zone. In 1987, Katsina State separated from Kaduna State to form its own entity. Currently, the states of Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, and Jigawa border Katsina. The state capital and the town of Daura, both known as the "Home of Hospitality," have been called "ancient centres of Islamic culture and study" in Nigeria.
Katsina State is the 17th largest of the country's 36 states in terms of land area, but it is the fifth largest by population, with about 5,800,000 people as of 2006. The state's major ethnic group is the Hausa people, and Islam is the state's most popular religion. Katsina was the sixth state in Nigeria to adopt Sharia law, doing so in 2005.
Katsina is a city in northern Nigeria, the state capital of Katsina, and is located not far from the Niger border. Kacinna (Katsena, Katsina) was the wife of Janzama (a Durbawa king at the time) and a princess of Daura; the town was named for her and was likely constructed around 1100 at Ambuttai, the residence of Katsina's Hausa kings and the annual meeting place for the rulers of neighbouring Durbi (the legendary home of the Hausa people, 49 miles [79 km] east). Katsina, after a brief period (c. 1513-54) under the Songhai askias ("emperors"), rose to prominence as the Hausa states' primary trans-Saharan caravan center in the late 16th century, a position it held until around 1815, when it was eclipsed by Kano and bypassed by new trade routes running south to the Gulf of Guinea coast.
The Fulani emirs of Katsina continue to play traditional and advisory roles and live in the Kangiwa ("Elephant's Head") palace; among the palace's royal treasures is Gajere, a sword with an Arabic inscription dating back to the 13th century that was used in the overthrow of the Kumayo-Durbawa dynasty in the early 14th century. The Gobarau Minaret is a 50-foot (15-meter) tower made of mud and palm branches that is associated with the town's enormous central mosque and likely dates back to the 18th century. The town's original wall, which stretched for 13.5 miles (22 kilometers), is now in ruins.
Katsina, Nigeria, is located 92 miles (148 km) to the southeast of the national capital, Kano, and serves as a significant transportation hub for the export of groundnuts and hides and skins. Sorghum, millet, onions, vegetables, peanuts, indigo, goats, chickens, sheep, cattle, and cotton are all commodities that change hands in Katsina's main market. The town's mostly Hausa population is skilled in a variety of trades, including weaving and dying cotton, leather and metalworking, and the creation of ceramics, needlework, and calabashes. Vegetable oil mills and a steel-rolling facility are only two examples of the modern industries that sprung up after the 1970s.
Katsina is one of the Nigerian states that has been severely hit by terrorism in recent years. The terrorist organization Boko Haram abducted approximately 300 children from the town of Kankara in the year 2020.
