THE DESCRIPTION OF IKOM 

History

Ikom is a local government area in Cross River State, located in the southern part of Nigeria, specifically in the South-south geopolitical zone. It is bordered by Ogoja to the north, Cameroon to the east, Obubra to the west, and Akamkpa and Biase to the south. Ikom is known for its rich cultural heritage, agricultural produce, and tourist attractions such as the Agbokim Waterfalls and the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. Cross River State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria and is situated in the South-south geopolitical zone. The state has a diverse population and is known for its unique culture, cuisine, and tourist attractions such as the Obudu Cattle Ranch, Kwa Falls, and the Cross River National Park. Ikom Local Government Area is one of the eighteen local government areas in Cross River State and is located in the northern part of the state, sharing borders with Cameroon to the east.

 

Geography

Ikom Local Government Area in Cross River State, Nigeria, is home to several tourist attractions, including the Agbokim Waterfalls and the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary. The Agbokim Waterfalls is a seven-part waterfall located about 17km from Ikom town, which cascades over steep cliffs and forms a beautiful pool at the base. The Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary is a conservation center and protected rainforest that is home to several endangered species such as chimpanzees, gorillas, drills, and many species of birds and butterflies. The sanctuary also features the Canopy Walkway, which offers visitors an opportunity to experience a bird's-eye view of the rainforest.

Economy

Ikom Local Government Area is known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse agricultural produce. The people of Ikom have a unique culture and traditions that are expressed through their music, dance, arts and crafts, and festivals such as the Nkang, Leboku, and Okpomkam masquerade festivals. Agriculture is also a major economic activity in Ikom, and the area is known for its production of crops such as cocoa, yams, plantains, cassava, and palm oil. The local farmers in Ikom also engage in livestock farming and fishing, which contribute significantly to the local economy.
