DESCRIPTION OF GBOKO

History of Gboko

Gboko local government area is situated in Benue state, the north-central of Nigeria, and has its headquarters settled in the town of Gboko. The local government shares boundaries with Buruku, Tarka, Gwer, Ushongo, and Konshisha LGAs. Several towns and villages that makeup Gboko local government include Mbadim, Mbatan, Mbaaverakaa, Mbakpegh, Ukpekpe, Mbaanku, and Igyorov. The Tor Tiv is the traditional administrator of the local government area. The estimated population of the Gboko local government area is more compared to other small LGAs with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Tiv ethnic group. The languages that is widely spoken in Gboko local government are Tiv and Hausa while Christianity and Islam are the commonly practiced religions in the LGA. Popular festivals that are held in Gboko local government include the Kwag-hir festival while some notable landmarks in the LGA include the Gboko polytechnic and the Dangote Cement plant.

The local government witnesses two main seasons which are the rainy and the dry seasons. Economy of Gboko

 

Gboko local government is rich in mineral deposits of Barite, limestone, granite, and alluvia clay. Farming is known as the main occupation of the people of Gboko local goverment with the area known for the cultivation of crops such as yam, rice, maize and cassava in substantially large quantities. Trade also blossoms very well in Gboko local government with the area been host to several markets such as the Ikpa, Ortese, and Tarukpe markets where a different variety of commodities are bought and sold by the area’s dwellers and neighboring LGAs.
