History of Atani

Atani is a local government area that is situated in Anambra State Nigeria. Atani is known as the headquarters of Ogbaru Local Government Area, in the Northern Senatorial District of Anambra State. The local government is one of the communities in Ogbaru located in Igboland. The political structure in Igboland begins with the family called Umunna as the smallest unit, and it extends to the community called Obodo, which is known to be the largest unit. It was a town occupied by early fishermen and migrant settlers. Atani is still known as the producer of fish, rice, yam, and cassava basin of Anambra state, and they produce most of the food sold in many markets in the Delta and Anambra States. Atani people are mainly Igbos.

Atani local government area has the wet season which is oppressive, warm, and overcast while they also have the dry season muggy, hot, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, there have been changes in the weather condition, the temperature typically varies from 67°F to 88°F and it is rarely below 60°F or above 91°F. The temperature in Atani local government varies so little throughout the year that little notice can one differentiate the hot season and the cold season. The Ogbaru people consider the River Niger waters that run through its region as their own territorial lands.

Atani local government has an industrial river harbor, a Nigerian naval base, a refinery, and a federal road that is under construction that leads to Rivers State in Nigeria. Atani LGA has a projected link road that leads to other parts of the southeast and south zones of Nigeria with construction of more inland link roads and also the construction of a the second Niger bridge.
