History of Shelleng

Shelleng is a Local Government Area (LGA) that is situated in Adamawa State, northeast Nigeria. The local government shares borders with Girei and Guyuk local governments and is made up of towns and villages such as Shelleng, Timbu, Ketembere, Kiri, Bodwai, Jumbul, Dunge, Gundo, Boburo, and Tallum. Shelleng Local government has an estimated population of inhabitants with the area consisting of different members of varying ethnic groups such as the Kana Kuri, Kiri, Fulani, Lala, and Bura. The Bura language is one of the spoken languages in Shelleng local government while the religions that are commonly practiced in the area are Christianity and Islam. Popular festivals that are celebrated by Shelleng local government include the festival of Mendamo while the landmarks located in the area include the Shelleng Cottage Hospital and the Kiri Dam.

Shelleng local government area covers a total number of 1,359 square kilometers and has an average temperature of about 32 °C. The local government area lies along the Lake Chad Basin and has the Gongola and Kiri Rivers flowing through its territory.

Economy of Shelleng

In Shelleng local government area fishing, farming, trading of livestocks and animal rearing are economic activities practiced with domestic animals such as goats, rams, cows, and horses reared and sold in large quantities within the area. The local government is also home to a vibrant trade sector, and it host several markets such as kasuwan kiri (kiri market) and kasuwan jun ma’a (Friday market) where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other economic activities that are undertaken by the people of Shelleng local government include pottery, hunting, and crafts making. The Kiri Dam is useful in supplying water for agriculture in the area and also it aides fishing.
