THE DESCRIPTION OF OHAUKWU

History of Ohaukwu 

Ohaukwu Local Government Area is a local government in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. It was created on August 27, 1991, by the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida when Ebonyi State was carved out of the old Enugu State.

Before the creation of Ebonyi State, Ohaukwu Local Government Area was part of the old Abakaliki Local Government Area. The area was later split into two local government areas, namely Ohaukwu and Onicha Local Government Areas.

The headquarters of Ohaukwu Local Government Area is located in the town of Ezzamgbo. The local government area covers an area of about 825 square kilometers and has a population of over 300,000 people.

Geography of Ohaukwu 

Ohaukwu Local Government Area is located in the southeastern part of Nigeria, in Ebonyi State. The local government area covers an area of about 825 square kilometers and is bordered by Benue State to the east, Cross River State to the south, and Abakaliki Local Government Area to the west.

The terrain of Ohaukwu Local Government Area is characterized by low-lying plains and undulating hills. The area is drained by several rivers and streams, including the Cross River and its tributaries, which provide a source of water for farming and other economic activities in the area.

The area has a tropical climate, with rainfall occurring mostly between March and October. The average annual rainfall in the area is about 2,000 millimeters. 

Economy of Ohaukwu 

The economy of Ohaukwu Local Government Area is largely driven by agriculture, with farming being the main occupation of the people. The fertile soil and favorable climatic conditions in the area support the cultivation of a wide range of crops, including yam, cassava, rice, maize, vegetables, and fruits. These crops are usually cultivated for subsistence and commercial purposes, with the surplus sold in local and regional markets.

In addition to farming, the area also has a significant number of small-scale businesses and trade activities, including food processing, artisanal mining, and retailing. The area is rich in natural resources such as timber, minerals, and wildlife, which provide opportunities for income generation through small-scale commercial exploitation.
