THE DESCRIPTION OF WARRI SOUTH
History of Warri South
Warri South Local Government is a local government area in Delta State, Nigeria. It was created on August 27, 1991, during the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, as part of a nationwide local government creation exercise that saw the number of local government areas in Nigeria increase from 301 to 453.
The area that is now known as Warri South Local Government was formerly part of Warri Local Government, which was created in 1976 during the military administration of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed. Warri Local Government was subsequently split into three local government areas, namely Warri South, Warri North, and Warri South-West.
Geography of Warri South
Warri South Local Government is located in the southern part of Delta State, Nigeria. It is bounded to the north by Warri North Local Government, to the east by Uvwie Local Government, to the west by Warri South-West Local Government, and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean.
The local government area covers a total land area of approximately 220 square kilometers, and its topography is generally low-lying and flat, with an average elevation of about 5 meters above sea level.
The area is drained by several rivers and creeks, including the Warri River, Escravos River, Forcados River, and their tributaries, which empty into the Atlantic Ocean. These waterways are important for transportation, fishing, and other economic activities.
Economy of Warri South
The economy of Warri South Local Government is largely driven by the oil and gas industry, which is the major source of revenue for the local government and the Delta State government. The area is home to several multinational oil and gas companies, including Chevron, Shell, and NNPC, which operate oil and gas exploration and production activities in the region.
In addition to the oil and gas industry, Warri South Local Government is also known for its maritime activities, due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The Warri Port, located in the local government area, serves as a major hub for shipping activities in the Niger Delta region, and is an important gateway for the export of oil and other commodities from Nigeria.
