THE DESCRIPTION OF WARRI NORTH

History of Warri North

Warri North is a Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria. It was created in 1991 from the former Warri Local Government Area.

Historically, the area has been home to several ethnic groups, including the Itsekiri, Urhobo, and Ijaw. The area was a major center for the slave trade during the 16th and 17th centuries, and European traders established a number of trading posts along the coast.

In the late 19th century, the British established a protectorate over the area and it became part of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. The Itsekiri people, who were traditionally the dominant group in the area, were recognized as the main ethnic group in Warri by the British.

Geography of Warri North

Warri North Local Government Area is located in the southern part of Delta State, Nigeria. It is bordered to the west by the Benin River and to the south by the Gulf of Guinea. It has a total land area of approximately 1,579 square kilometers and a population of over 200,000 people, according to the 2006 census.

The terrain of Warri North is predominantly low-lying and swampy, with a network of creeks and rivers that flow into the Benin River and the Gulf of Guinea. The area is known for its mangrove forests, which provide important habitats for a variety of wildlife, including birds, fish, and mammals.

Economy of Warri North

The economy of Warri North is largely driven by the oil and gas industry, which has been a major source of revenue for the local government and the Nigerian government as a whole. Several multinational oil and gas companies, including Chevron, Shell, and NPDC, operate in the area, producing crude oil and natural gas. The area is also home to several gas processing plants, including the Utorogu Gas Plant, which processes gas from oil fields in the region.

Fishing is another important economic activity in Warri North, particularly in the coastal areas and the creeks and rivers that flow into the Benin River and the Gulf of Guinea.
