THE DESCRIPTION OF ODUKPANI

Geography

Odukpani Local Government Area is located in the Southern part of Cross River State, Nigeria, and is bordered by Akpabuyo Local Government Area to the south, Biase Local Government Area to the east, and the Calabar River to the west. It covers an area of approximately 864 square kilometers and is situated within the tropical rainforest zone.

The area is characterized by hills and valleys, and the terrain is generally undulating. The highest point in Odukpani is the Oban Hills, which rise to a height of about 1,000 meters above sea level. The hills provide a scenic view of the surrounding landscape and are a major attraction for tourists.

The climate of Odukpani is tropical, with high temperatures and humidity throughout the year. The area receives heavy rainfall between April and October, with an average annual rainfall of about 3,000mm. The rainy season is usually followed by a short dry season between November and February, after which the harmattan winds blow in from the Sahara Desert.

History

The history of Odukpani Local Government Area in Cross River State, Nigeria, dates back to the pre-colonial era when the Efik people inhabited the area. The Efik people were known for their trade and commerce activities, and their presence in Odukpani contributed to the growth and development of the area. During the colonial era, the British established a presence in Odukpani, and the area became part of the Southern Protectorate. In 1946, Odukpani was carved out of the Eastern Region and became part of the then Calabar-Ogoja-Rivers state.
