History of Bayo

Bayo Local Government has a rich history, which dates back to the pre-colonial era. The area was originally inhabited by the Chamba and Marghi ethnic groups, who were mainly farmers and hunters.

In the early 19th century, the area came under the influence of the Sokoto Caliphate, which was founded by the Fulani people in 1804. The Caliphate established its authority over the region, and Bayo became a part of the Caliphate's administrative structure.

During the colonial period, the British established their presence in the area, and Bayo became a part of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. The colonial government established a district office in Bayo in 1904, which marked the beginning of British rule in the area.

After Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Bayo became a part of the newly created Northern Region. In 1967, following the creation of states in Nigeria, Bayo was included in the newly created Gongola State, which later became Adamawa and Taraba States.
