DESCRIPTION OF TAFAWA BALEWA

History of Tafawa Balewa

Tafawa Balewa is a local government area situated in the Southern part of Bauchi State northern Nigeria. Its headquarters was settled in the town of Tafawa Balewa and now has been shifted to Bununu town in the year 2011 due to constant unrest in the former.

 

The name "Tafawa Balewa” originated from two Fulani words: "Tafari" (rock) and Baleri (black)."

The local government area has been known for ethnic violence and sectarianism over the years. The main ethnic groups are the Hausa/Fulani and Sayawa. A Press story states that "The Sayawas are the majority in the town and its surrounding villages, but their traditional rulers have been of the mainly Muslim Fulani ethnic group. The Sayawas have severally demanded a separate traditional ruler, which has resulted in attacks and also counterattacks over the past two decades.

In the year 2011, Bauchi State, Governor Isa Yuguda "threatened to demolish the town of Tafawa Balewa with the exception of government institutions like the hospitals and schools," telling inhabitants “You should either allow peaceful coexistence or you stand the risk of total ejection from Tafawa Balewa. I will completely demolish the town for peace to reign.” " There was an emergency joint stakeholders meeting of the Christians and Muslims representatives of Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro local government areas"  held, and an agreement was reached.

Tafawa Balewa local government has an average temperature of about 32 degrees centigrade and has the Gongola River flowing past sides of its territory. The local government area has a tropical climate and observes two distinct seasons which are the rainy and the dry seasons. The average wind speed in Tafawa Balewa local government is calculated at 10 km/h.

Economy of Tafawa Balewa

 

Cultivation of Crops is an important feature in the economy of Tafawa Balewa local government with crops such as beans, rice, guinea corn, and millet grown in the LGA. Some domestic animals are also reared and sold in the LGA. Other occupations engaged by the people of Tafawa Balewa local government include hunting, food processing, and welding.
