Description of Awka North
Awka North local government area lies below 300 meters above sea in a valley that is situated on the plains of the Mamu River. Having two cuestas or ridges, both lying in a north–south direction, form the main topographical features of the area. The ridges get to the paramount point at Agulu just outside the Capital Territory.
History of Awka North
Awka North is a Local Government Area that is situated in Anambra State, south-central of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In Awka North, the towns that make up the local government is Mgbakwu, Achalla (the capital), Awba Ofemili, Ugbene, Ebenebe, Amanuke, Isu Aniocha, Urum, Amansea, Ugbenu.
Awka is the capital of Anambra state, located in the southern part of Nigeria. The local government lies along roads that are leading from Umuahia, Onitsha, Owerri, and Enugu. Formerly the local government was covered with tropical forest; the area around Awka North now mostly entails wooded grassland.
Awka North local government is known as the traditional home of the Igbo (Ibo) blacksmiths; early bronze artifacts have been revealed in the vicinity, and the town’s artisans that are present till this day are still noted for their wood carving and metalworking. In the 19th century, Awka’s Oracle called “Agbala oracle”, which was subservient to the highest Igbo oracle (Chuku) at Arochukwu, was known to be an active instrument of the hinterland slave trade.
