History of Mobi

Mubi local government area was founded by the Fulani people in the late 18th century, Mubi remained under the control of the sultanate of Mandara until it was conquered by Modibbo Adama in the Fulani jihad (holy war). In 1820s the people of Mobi and the surrounding area were merged with the Adama’s Fulani kingdom of Fumbina, later called Adamawa; In1890s the people were subjected to slave raids by the emir of Adamawa, Zubeiru. The town was later sieged by German forces in the year. Mubi and its region were kept by a League of Nations mandate in the British Cameroons in 1922. In the year 1961 Mubi became part of Nigeria.

Economy of Mobi

The people of Mobi primarily engaged in farming and herding (sheep, cattle, goats), but fishing is also an important part of the people’s activities. The main crops that Mobi local government grows are sorghum, millet, rice, peanuts (groundnuts), cotton, and corn (maize). Cottons and peanut are exported, as dyed skins, cattle, and gum Arabic are also imported. Cottage industries include leather work, mat weaving, pottery making, metalwork, calabash decoration, canoe carving, and cloth dyeing.
