Geographical Description of Umunneochi

Umunneochi is a Local Government Area situated in Abia State, Nigeria. The local government area is officially known as "Nneochi", Umunneochi local government area is made up of three major septs: Nneato, Umuchieze, and Isuochi. The major towns of Umunneochi are Ndiawa, Amuda, Ngodo-ukwu, Lomara Lokpanta, Lekwesi Lokpaukwu, Leru, Umuelem, and Mbala . These towns repeatedly have been reorganized. The highest traditional ruler of isuochi is the Eze G I Ezekwesiri, the Ochi 1 of Isuochi, while the federating autonomous communities are governed by the Ndi-Eze.Umunneochi LGA headquarters is located in the administrative town of Nkwoagu, Isuochi. Nkwoagu is also known as the administrative capital, which in ancient and modern times was the administrative and political rallying point for the Umunneochi autonomous communities. Umunneochi local government occupies 368 km2 with a population of about 163,928, according to the 2006 Nigeria National census.

History of Umunneochi

The name ‘Umunneochi’ is, historically, an offshoot of the name of the ancestral father of the nine town villages that make up the modern town. According to the history told the ancestor, Ochi, fathered Ihite and Ezi. Ihite and Ezi in turn became fathers to the nine sons that became the fathers of the populace that made the ancient Kingdom of Umunneochi. In other words, the people are the grandchildren (sons and daughters of) and descendants of Ochi.

Economy of Umunneochi

Taking a deep look at the economy of Umunneochi local government, the major occupations of the people include agriculture and granite, quorite, and also laterite mining and trading. The main agricultural food crops of the Umunneochi people are black beans, cassava, yam, and cocoyam. They also have cash crops like palm nuts and cashew nuts. Pottery is another occupation of the Umunneochi people. Nigeria's biggest cattle market is in the lokpanta area.
