Description of Osisioma, Abia State

Osisioma Local Government Area is located in the state of Abia, Nigeria. Its headquarters are located in the Osisioma town. Osisioma local government has an area of 198 km (76 sq mi) and a population of about 219,632 as per the 2006 census data of Nigeria.

Osisioma shares a border with the people of Ukwa West and Ugwunagbo in the South, Isiala Ngwa South LGA in the North, Aba South LGA and Aba North LGA in the East, and Omuma LGA, Rivers State in the West. Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway cuts across the area of Osisioma with the Aba-Owerri Road running through it from Aba Town Hall down to the Oil filling station called Olaz.  Osisioma has other main routes such as the NNPC depot road which leads to the local government headquarters of Osisioma as well as High and Magistrates Court, Osisioma Police Divisional Headquarters, and Ekeakpara market down to Owerrinta the boundary between Abia State and Imo State.

History of Osisioma

Osisioma local government is a land without hills or mountains and it has a headwater located at Okpu Umuobo that runs through the thick forest and cut across into the city of Aba River waterside in the Ogbor Hill. The river is a tributary of that of the Imo River that is located in the Southern part of Nigeria. In Osisioma local government area people make a living as traders, artisans, farmers, and craftsmen. The typical Osisioma men in the old days usually put on what is called "ọgọdọ". The Ọgọdọ is a type of white woven cloth  that is usually tied around the waistline to cover their nakedness and the women use the fabric as a wrapper to cover their body from the chest flowing down to the knees.

Economy of Osisioma

Agriculture is the main occupation of the Osisioma people. The Osisioma people are mostly subsistence farmers and they grow Rafia Palm, Vegetable, Cassava, yam, cocoa yam, Oil Palm, Ube (Local Pear), Plantain, Okra, Maize, melon, red pepper etc. The Osisioma people alsorear animals such as sheeps, goats, fowl, and occasionally cattle, but they don’t largely grow crops or rear animals in commercial quantity.
